‘I do….. Now where are we getting married…????’
We all know it is one of the biggest things to get ticked off your wedding list – Venue!
It is one HUGE weight off your mind when you’ve locked in somewhere to celebrate your special day, and that you feel when you walk inside, that it captures the comfort and representation of what you and your partner are all about.
Well not only does the Mercure Queenstown hit the Venue ball right out of the park with its awesome location and breathtaking views, it can sleep all your guests too!!!! This double whammy QWA Member got to sit in the spot-light this month, and here to tell us all about why you should go check out this little beauty perched up on the hill, is Michelle Dent, Mercure’s Sales and Marketing Manager.
Where did it all begin for you Michelle?
I have been involved in hotels for 30 years! Eek! I have been organising and arranging weddings in hotels for the past 20 years. I was with Rydges Christchurch originally and moved to Queenstown to a role as F & B Manager for Rydges Queenstown in 1997. In 2002 I moved to Mercure Queenstown in a Sales and Marketing / Event Sales role and the time has flown it’s been 14 years!
Wow – they say time flies when you’re having fun! But what is it that Mercure captures inside you and what is your biggest LOVE about your venue?
The VIEW, VIEW,VIEW it was great to have a hotel that was more intimate and a family style culture. The opportunities to sell the amazing wedding venue has been a highlight. My greatest love is the hotels flexibility, having two restaurants with great views and an adjoining conference room for reception dances means we can really assist with making weddings and events easy and work well with our other guests. The Balcony for Celebrant ceremonies is amazing and is just picture postcard perfect for weddings.
What services do you offer for your clients at Mercure?
We offer two tiers of accommodation – Garden View and Lake View to suit all budgets. We offer a full Wedding coordination service with all aspects of wedding planning covered by myself and a truly professional F & B team. We have also been hosting a lot of off-site wedding accommodation in the past few years as this market has grown.
Wow, so really all you need to do is turn up on the day?! I love that you guys have everything covered in house, that can take the pressure of immensely if you are booking your wedding out of town! So I take it there is a vast selection of packages to choose from?
We offer a complimentary night in our Junior Suite with breakfast and bubbles and many menus from Buffets to TDH with beverages on consumption or Beverage packages. Our Chef is also happy to be flexible and include special dishes or requests for the dinner menu.
Ok, well now for the nitty gritty – in all your years’ experience Michelle, you MUST have some fantastic wedding stories to tell us……
So we had pre dinner drinks out by our pool and I was waiting for all the guests to come back to the Vista Restaurant so we could start the Reception dinner. It was taking a long, long time when my colleague came down to me and said “I’m sorry Michelle, we shall be delayed as I have fished the bridesmaids out of the pool and they are drying off!” The same wedding party indulged in Tequila shots out of the boot of the classic Bridal car in the car park and a near miss lesbian show on the balcony!
Wow – I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall for that one! I can reveal that mine was as a wedding planner back in England at on old neo-Elizabethan Style Manor house built in 1700’s (just to set the scene). I was told the Brides dress was so tight she couldn’t sit down in it, and her shoes were so high she couldn’t walk in them! She was carried around all day on a chair that looked like it had been stolen from the dump, and her hands and feet were shackled with hand cuffs!! After the first dance, her brother-in-law wrapped them both in a leather cape, where he placed a chain and padlock around them and they ran off up the stairs. I’m not sure who was more shocked all day, myself and my staff or their guests!!! I do remember the GM telling me to close my mouth and stop staring though!! Haha! Can you remember one of your favorite weddings?
I did a really great traditional Maori wedding for an English couple who eloped. They arranged it through a Maori celebrant in Rotorua and we were the witnesses. It was really special complete with a powhiri and amazing spiritual service.
And lastly, what do you feel makes Queenstown such a wonderful place to get married?
The exception landscapes and scenery ensures it’s not just a wedding but a whole experience for both the bride and groom and the family and friends who attend.
So there you have it folks, a sneaky peak into one of Queenstown’s most scenic hotels, that not only covers the entire wedding day check list, but ensures everyone gets a good night’s sleep after celebrating the big day!
